Media Center Student Handbook

 

Library Hours

The library is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Students must come with their classes or be sent by a teacher along with a note.  Students wishing to come outside of classes before or after school must have a library pass.  Students may pick up a pass from Mrs. Brewer or Mrs. Sweat early in the day to stay in the afternoon or the day before for a morning pass.  Teachers patrol hallways and a pass is necessary to enter the hallways or the library.  Students may get help from the Media Specialist throughout the day.

Student Check-Out And Times

Students may check out two books at a time.  Books are checked out for two weeks.  Reference books are not checked out except for older encyclopedias.

Each Language Arts class is scheduled into the Media Center by their Language Arts teacher for book check-out.   If students wish to return and check out another book before their next Library time, they are welcomed to come at 8:00 a.m. with a pass, anytime during the day with a permission slip from their teacher, or any afternoon until 4:00 p.m. with a pass.  Books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System for Non-Fiction books.  Books are arranged according to the first three letters of the author’s surname for Fiction books.  Magazines are arranged in alphabetical order.  Reference books are arranged alphabetical along with the consecutive volumes.

Behavior Policy

·         Be polite

·         Be aware of other users in the library.

·         Use appropriate language and behavior in the library.

·         Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in the library.

·         Do not damage or deface library items including books, audiotapes, CD-ROMs, references, or exhibits in any way.

·         Items should not be removed from the library without properly checking the items out.

·         Please do not try to remedy defects in items checked out.  Please bring it to the attention of Mrs. Brewer or Mrs. Sweat for proper maintenance.

For first offenses, students will be asked to cease the behavior.  If action continues, students may be asked to go back to their assigned classroom.  For serious offenses, students will be taken to the administration.

Student Book Return

 Books are checked out for two weeks.  Reference books are not checked-out except for older encyclopedias.

 Return books should be placed in the BOOK RETURN SLOT at the Circulation Desk.  Fines are $0.05 per day per book.  Students will receive late notices of overdue books every week through Language Arts teachers and first hour teachers.  Parents will receive notices through mid-term and end of quarter grade reports.  Students must pay replacement cost for lost books.

Student Independent Use of the Library

Teachers may send a maximum of five students at a time from one class (unaccompanied by the instructor).  Students must have a note from the teacher indicating the names of the students, the amount of time needed in the Media Center, and the nature of the directed activity.  Upon, arrival, students should immediately check in with the Mrs. Brewer or Mrs. Sweat.

Research Time In The Library

Students may come into the library for research materials.  Students may come into the library with their classes or come in at 8:00 to 4:00 p.m. with a pass.  Students must have permission to leave their classrooms and bring a note to the Mrs. Brewer or Mrs. Sweat.

Student Group Use Of The Library

Students may use the library in groups for study sessions, assignments, or research.  For group use of the library, students must sit together in the library.  Students are not to disturb other students working independently or in other group.  Students may use any of the materials in the library.

Computer Resources and Related Equipment

The Library Media Center is automated for circulation and catalog access.  The library has nine student workstations.  Students have access to several online and CD-ROM references.

Students are not permitted to change settings, damage equipment in any way, or use the computer equipment in an inappropriate manner.  Students violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary actions.  This includes Internet use. 

Copier Use Policy

Copier use is allowed through the Copyright Laws.  Students are permitted to make copies on the copier for ten cents.  The library staff will assist you in making copies.

Student Exhibits

Students are encouraged to bring items created for academic purposes to the library for display.

Student Suggestions

Student suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Students may place notes suggesting equipment, books, references, or activities they would like to have in the library in the suggestion box at the end of the circulation desk.
